Help...Still Having "Grab Button" Nightmares? Might be your Curly Quotes!

No blog is complete with a "Grab-My-Button".

You're a warrior, a blogging diva, a multi-tasking mom with a self-hosted site.............you manage to do all that, so you dive in head first to accomplish this seemingly small task. Seriously, it's not at all difficult to execute. It's finding a spare, quite, moment to pull it off that's hard.

IF YOU HAVEN'T PUT TOGETHER YOUR OWN GRAB-ME-BUTTON....................CLICK HERE FOR THE BASICS.

So, you did it! You made a graphic image, uploaded it, wrote the code, pasted it in your sidebar, and the only comments you're getting are complaints. "Why doesn't this work?", "What am I doing wrong?".....how the hell do you know, you barely got it up there to begin with. You don't know enough to answer their questions, and you sure don't have time to research the problem.

Do you remove it altogether, save yourself the headache? Leave it, as a useless image? You went through all that trouble to build it, and you want fellow bloggers to add it to their site. At the moment, that's not happening.

You've skimmed over the code countless times....it all looks okay. Take a closer look and you might notice something just a little off.....

I can't tell you how many times I've seen this problem in grab-me-code. WordPress has a tendency to convert regular "quotes" into "curly quotes"....actually italics. It's such a tiny thing, most don't see it, and it can become a nightmare trying to figure out what's going wrong. Great news is..............there's a super-simple solution!!!

I know............awfully long post for something simple. Sorry!

GO INTO YOUR PLUGINS, CLICK ADD NEW, AND TYPE IN "NO CURLY QUOTES". It's the one at the top of the list with 5 stars! Install with a single-click, no configuration. Just re-publish the page you were working on, or re-save your widget, and check the front of your blog. Breath a sigh of relief, and give yourself  a pat on the back! Yet again, you can add another notch to your blogging belt! :) Best of all.........no more complaints from fellow bloggers. Do other noobie bloggers a favor and share this post, or repost on your blog, to make the blogging world a more productive place.

Coupon Blogger?? You WANT this Click & Print Plugin!!

Designing for mom-bloggers, I get the request pretty often for a "printable list" plugin that can be used for coupons. The only thing I knew of up till now cost $199! That's ridiculous! Thanks to Jenetta from Frugal Freebies & Deals (make sure you visit her and say thanks if this plugin is something you've been looking for!) She wrote me to share this plugin she found. Best of all it's FREE!!!  :Happy-Grin:

Download Mile51's "Select & Print" Plugin for WP!

I don't need it for my blog, but I've downloaded & installed it to see how easy it is to use. It's a simple one-click install. It has options for setting header text & logo, plus sidebar and footer ads/text on the print page.

This is just to test it out...

Some sort of great deal placed here that you definitely want to click and print!

Foodies....OpenEats2 Recipe Plugin Rocks (Alpha)

I was looking for a completely different plugin, but stumbled across this and thought it was def worth mentioning! It's still in Alpha state, so not intended for use on a 'live' blog, unless brave. Haven't tried it myself (yet), but looks like a good amount of work is going into development. Most of all it's very visually appealing!

openeats screen shot openeats recipe page

Nice gallery image for recipe categories, that link to each recipe. Each recipe page is nicely & professionally laid-out, with ingredients section, directions area. Top left lists the type of "Course" (breakfast, dessert, appetizer, etc), the "Cuisine" type (American, Greek, Italian, etc), and the "Chef" who submitted the recipes (in place of "author"). Built in 5 star rating system. How many the recipe feeds, and the prep/cook time. Buttons to "Like" and "Share", and comment feedback.

The only thing that's missing from this plugin is an option to print a shopping list!

VISIT THE OPENEATS WEBSITE HERE. THERE'S ALSO A FORUM, IF YOU'RE SUPER INTERESTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PLUGIN, WHERE YOU CAN SUGGEST ADDITIONS, CRITIQUE, ETC.

Make a Welcome Page for Facebook Fan Page...

Sometimes I go through the motions....hitting the high points of what needs to be done in general, and...it's not until (much) later that I catch up on 'the options'. So, maybe everyone already know about this, but...I found it useful, so I'm passing it on.

Instead of having people land on your facebook (fan page) WALL...set up a simple WELCOME page/tab in a minute or two. Go to your facebook fan page, click EDIT page...then APPLICATIONS, and there should be a app button that looks like this

It's the FBML app (a play on HTML)...that means you're not just limited to text. You can add images, bold, links, animated gifs...anything to make you fan page more dynamic, more interactive, and less............static! Note: Open 2 pages for your fan page. One for editing and one for viewing, so you can jump back and forth between edits to see what you've got. While you're in the edit section....go to GENERAL and set the LANDING PAGE to your new WELCOME tab! Viola!

Save sidebar space with "Sidebar Tabs" Plugin!

Many WordPress themes now come loaded with this feature of  "sidebar tabs". It condenses "categories", "archives", "recentsidebar tabs plugincomments", "tags", and "popular posts"...or any group of widgets into one small space, with easy to navigate tabs, saving valuable real estate. A must have plugin if you're monetizing your blog, and need every square inch for ad space.

If your theme doesn't have sidebar tabs...installing it is a simple, one-click process through admin. Simply choose the widgets from the drop-down list it pulls up, and click save.  Very quick & simple! Note: Temporarily label your html/text widgets that don't have labels, so you can tell which is which. Only label the ones you want to move to the sidebar tabs area. They'll need labels anyway, unless you use icons in place of text-label.

If you use WordPress, and you're thinking about tightening up your sidebars and making some extra room for more stuff....I'd definitely suggest trying this widget. It comes with stock icons for the tabs, but they're a little limited. Use text, or upload and replace with any graphic icons of your choice.
