...the cake...

It's all a little fuzzy now, but made some modeling chocolate (white) way ahead of time. Was super easy using 16oz white chocolate block and 7 Tbs. light corn syrup. Preheated the oven to (I think) 225, then turned it off, and placed the entire block (and cardboard tray) in the oven to sit & warm. Put James to bed, and when I got it up it was perfectly melted! Typically I mess up with too much heat...doesn't matter if it's the microwave or stove top...it seizes up and turns into a big, grainy, unusable wad. I mixed in the syrup, placed it in the fridge, and took this as a good sign. That was at the beginning of the week. The next day I began sculpting Sponge Bob characters. Wasn't too hard. Reminded me exactly of Fimo, or Scuply...can only work with it for short periods, bcuz it warms up too much and starts to distort when sculpting other features. The next day, I bumped the tray...and all the pieces shattered on the floor. Fixed them, and that evening James got a hold of the tray, and did the same thing!

Finally got them altogether and finished on Friday night. Had just put James to bed, and was excited to sit down and paint them all. Made myself some coffee, got out all my gel food-colors, and brushes, and....................total disaster! The color just rolled around on the surface. I'm an artist, so...when I say I tried everything...I did. I tried thinning the color with gin, and oil, dry brushing, etc. Nothing worked. They looked terrible. Was just too much fat in the chocolate for anything to stick. I guess powdered food color is what's needed, but I didn't have any. Holding back much disipointment...I decided to scrap the sculpted characters, and re-think the entire cake. I still had the fondant.

My dad and step-mom arrived the same evening, so luckily I was distracted. I started the cake Saturday morning....remembering all I had was white, self-rising flour, and A.P. whole wheat. I went with the organic, whole wheat, and a lemon flavored cake, with lemon curd filling. The cakes didn't cook all the way through (first attempt), and after trying to rebake them, etc. I scrapped it, and started from scratch with the self-rising. Second attempt was fine, just left out the baking powder, and soda. I made sure the cakes were completely cool first. I always rush, and then the frosting starts to slide off! I decided not to use the fondant. My dad thought it was gross.  And...I really didn't see the point. I have some piping tips and just thought I'd do a more traditional cake/decoration. I guess the frosting was too stiff, and it tore up the cake some while doing the main frosting. My dad rescued me, bcuz I was almost in tears. LoL. I thinned out the frosting just a smidge for the decorative icing, but then it was too thin, and wouldn't hold shape! By then the cake was a mess!!!! It was past the point of frustration...now it was just silly-ridiculous! Might as well made it with two left hands, and I'm right-handed! James himself probably would have done a better job!

All in all it looked terrible. The cake tasted pretty good, the filling was too sour, but the frosting was nice and buttery, and not too sweet. Edible, and James liked it, so I have a year to practice!!! Patience, lots of love, and a sense of humor got us through this birthday laughing. Except for this one small incident with the birthday candle!

Tummy Tub Review & Giveaway!

falcon tested awardTHIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW OVER. THE WINNER WAS BRITNI. THANKS TO ALL WHO ENTERED!!!!

The great folks over at Tummy Tub USA were kind enough to send me a Tummy Tub for Falcon, after I wrote abouttummy tub usamy dilemma with bath-time. I bought an infant tub for Falcon, prior to his birth. They're are basically the same design...tub shaped, and designed to fit over the sink...which it didn't. It was just a quarter of an inch too big. I used it probably a half dozen times before he outgrew it, and we moved on to using the sink. It's stainless, and cold...so it required putting a towel down inside the sink for padding and comfort. The sink was great, until........he outgrew that as well. We have one garden tub that's very non-economical to fill up, especially to wash a baby. The water heater doesn't even fill it up all the way, so that wasn't an option. I had a plastic storage tub laying around that I used for awhile. He fit in it nicely, but it had sharp parts on the bottom (from the extruding method), and again...required that I line it with a towel. A sopping towel that just added to the hassle of bath-time.

Finally, I just gave up on baths altogether and started showering Falcon. Of course, I had to take a shower as well, which sometimes at the end of the day I just don't always have energy for. Slightly involved...requiring the use of the stroller (luckily it's a large bathroom). I'd wheel him up, take my shower first, then scoop him up for his. Dangerously slippery, but it worked for the most part. I'd still be going that route if I hadn't gotten the Tummy Tub. All I can say is Thank God for small blessings!

THE TUMMY TUB IS FABULOUS!!!

It's smooth, and solid...no sharp edges, no cold steel, no need for lining it. Best of all it requires only a small amount water...so not only is highly economical, and energy efficient, but evironmentally friendly as well! There's a line a fill line on the tub to make it easy. I've watched the videos on youtube and I know it's perfect for small babies (which Falcon is not). I was a little worried he wouldn't fit into it comfortably, but...he LOVES it! I place it on the bathroom counter, in front of the large mirror. He loves watching himself in the tub. I also took it camping with us, and it was perfect. I put all his bath-time supplies in it, and 2 towels...and it packed away nicely. Giving him a bath only required that I heat up a small amount of water! It's sturdy, even with his weight...and doesn't tip over, although this is the safest tub imaginable...NEVER leave your child unattended during a bath (of course we all know that).

Another great thing about the Tummy Tub is it's transparent, which is just so damn cute to see him all scooched down, with his little bum pressed against the plastic...makes me giggle. I found it really interesting that he fit perfectly into the tub, but that the longer he stays in it...the more and more he nestles into it. It is just exactly like a womb, and I can tell he's really secure feeling in it! Also, even being a big as he is...it's not difficult to get my hands in the tub and wash him well. Washing his hair is super easy too. I use very little soap, as he's never that dirty...I add a few drops to the bath water, along with oatmeal powder, and it's not even necessary to rinse him off afterwards. And, for the small amount of water that's used...it stays warm for the entire duration of his bath, and unlike other tub designs...he's fully submerged in the warm water. I like that it's light weight, sturdy in design, made with safe materials, and can be easily set up anywhere. I love bathing Falcon outside on sunny days! My question is...why don't they make these for adults?!?
