OMGosh……………..how cool are these?!?!? Simple easy to set up. Enter Etsy name, pick a theme, and grab the code! Check out mine in the left sidebar. Installed in seconds. Literally!
As part of our Handmade Code series, we’re bringing you news and how-to’s about the innovations emerging from the Etsy Developer Community. Located atdeveloper.etsy.com, the Etsy Developer Community serves as a hub for third-party software developers who are making neat and helpful programs for Etsy shoppers and sellers. In this edition, magicjelly and juln of Craft Cult present their latest application, The Pocket Shop.
Who is your application for?
The Pocket Shop is made for Etsy shop owners who want to market their wares on their blog or website.
What’s the basic idea of the application and what need does it fill?
Our widget provides a shop presence on the sidebar of your blog and encourages your visitors to click and buy! The animated slide show draws attention and features controls that enable anyone to easily browse your shop. Visitors can scroll back and forth, pause, and flip through the array of products very quickly by toggling to the grid view. People seem to really enjoy the fun themes and interactivity. It’s easy to install, and is always updated with your latest items.
In designing the Pocket Shop, we worked very hard to include further information about the shop owner, which was not easy to do because the widget is so tiny. (It’s a little bit like packing a small suitcase for a long vacation!) We feel that providing background information about the shop owner is a vital part of marketing a business, so we designed the Pocket Shop to display recent feedback comments you’ve received from your buyers, recent shop hearts, and a brief profile, in conjunction with the items in your shop.
We wanted to make a customizable, visually engaging shop widget that would complement the Etsy Mini, with different functionality. Judging by the amount of people who have embedded their Pocket Shop on their blogs along with the Mini, they seem to complement each other very well.
How do you use it?
You can make a widget in six easy steps, then install it on your blog by pasting in the code we supply. We have included directions on how to install your widget on four common blog platforms: Blogspot, Tumblr, TypePad and WordPress.
The widget has four sections: Shop, Info, Hearts and Feedback.
- Shop: Shows your shop items in slide show and grid format. You can select a shop section, show your Featured Items, or show 1-200 of your items in order of most or least recent.
- Info: Tells your visitors a bit about your shop. The details include your shop name, title, a summary of some statistics and your favorite materials.
- Hearts: Shows who has added your shop as a favorite recently.
- Feedback: Displays the most recent comments from buyers about the good experiences they’ve had shopping with you.
What should a user do if there’s a bug or a problem? Who should one contact?
If you have any questions, comments, feature requests or bug reports, please email us or send aconversation to juln or magicjelly on Etsy. You can find our email address on our contact page at Craft Cult.
What is your favorite part of the app?
It’s seeing it come to life with so many different shops. The Pocket Shop really provides a great context to showcase your creativity. The themes are very versatile and suit a broad range of shops — from the Noir and Ice Gloss themes that are extremely versatile, to the very popular Vintage Postcard or Ruled themes that have a more distinctive look. We’ve received a lot of positive feedback so far about the Pocket Shop from Etsy shop owners, which makes us very happy!
Some people have asked for a more minimalist, pared down theme, which was something we were already thinking about doing. So we’ve just launched the all-white Snow Cap theme. We’ll be rolling out new themes as often as possible (and we have some more new features in the works), so check back to Craft Cult regularly!
Anything else you’d like to add?
We put a lot of development time into the Pocket Shop, which wouldn’t be possible without the support of our advertisers — and the Craft Cult visitors who support our advertisers — so we’d like to extend a big thank you to the Etsy community!
Calling all Pocket Shop users! Post in the comments below and let us know what you think.
